Default Sonar picture

Someone sent me another side scan sonar picture and I just wanted to see
what people thought about it. Any comments?

Steve

Not a typhoon, wrong wing planform and engine cowling. Most likely to be a
Thunderbolt. Thunderboolts were used by the RAF (e.g. 611 Squadron)

Well I was wondering that. The trademark of SSS is the
bright return of the vertical surfaces and the shadow
behind that that tells you its height. It only looks
a bit three-dimentional with a lot of faith. This is
just too good.

Side scanning a tailfin/rudder like that will just not
give that sort of view. Think about how the fish is
scanning and where the shadows should be.

Also 50 years underwater, even still, fresh water, would
reduce the wings to spars not to mention the damage from
doing the air-water interchange (at least a flying boat,
the previous picture, had the excuse it might sink).

I fear somebody may well be being hoaxed. I hope it is
just us not a prospective sponsor.

I must admit my first reaction was "Hmm, looks too good" as well...

Yup I agree, it doesn't look right for sidescan - the shadows and contrast
just aren't right.

However, quite remarkable sidescan images are possible :)

Faked or not and I don't think they made a single engine fighter in fact
IIRC the only single engine aircraft
they aircraft produced were the Beaver and Chipmunk but the tail looks
very DeHavilland to me.
That rounded top to the main tail & Elevators looks familiar.

Also, what is the return of mud?

I've dived a few of the lakes in question and always found the bottom to
be very silty - even more so at any depth. I would have thought that
over the years since anything has crashed there unreported that the
plane would have sunk into the silt (or the silt would have piled up
around it). I'm not very good at interpretting SSS images, but it
appears that the aircraft is in a depression... does that mean anything?
