| Hello, Did I read wrong on the respective web sites of dan usa and dan europe ? or there is a huge difference in price between DAN USA (29 $ ) and DAN Europe (68 euro) membership fee? Why this difference, is enourmous, why ? Can I register in DAN USA and have the same rights even if I am resident in Italia? Please explain me. Thanks, Mario |

And what rights would these be? You could ask DAN Europe direct. I have some E Mail addresses if you want...... Pete S. |

I did some research to see what I could figure out. There are a few hints, but nothing certain, at least nothing I know enough to identify. 1. DAN America is associated with Duke University. The university medical department, which has it's own funding, provides a lot of the medical support for Dan's operation. That may or may not be the case in the UK. 2. DAN America is a non profit organization. That has special meaning here in the U.S. Contributions to DAN are deductible from income for federal income tax purposes. You may assume that DAN gets a lot more contributions because those contributions reduce the amount of income tax paid. For every dollar I contribute to DAN or any of many other tax deductible charities and organizations, I get about 38% back in reduced tax. 3. Dan America is roughly 50% supported by membership dues. As the country that has more active divers than any place else in the world, DAN America does not need to charge a lot to get by. Remember, they're not for profit. While this does not mean that they aren't interested in income, it does mean that they aren't as pressured to more than meet expenses than investor funded corporations. 4. Depending on the tax consequences, there may also be a bit of parking of profits involved. I don't know the corporate tax laws in the UK, but here, corporations pay considerably higher rates than individuals. If the reverse is true in the UK, the increased cost there may be at least partly a tax dodge. I suspect that the difference is a combination of the reduced cost thanks to university support, the availability of contributions thanks to tax deductions and the economy of scale that comes from having so many U.SO. customers. Then again, it might just be that DAN Europe is ripping you off because they can. Lee |

It's standard practise that US companies tend to mark up products or services they offer in other parts of the world. A former company I worked for had a 25% uplift for Europe. Then you might have to add VAT, and all of a sudden things cost 50% more. - Keith |
