Default spearfishing in UK

Hi everybody

currently I'm living in Spain, but i'm going to move to UK in
September.
I've just start to practice spearfishing six months ago, and I wonder
if I could practice this sport in UK.

Can I spearfish in UK during winter?
Is a 7 mm neoprene suit warm enought?

thanks in advance

Don't think there's anything to stop you spearfishing - check local
regulations before you do it (some areas are protected), but other than that
shouldn't be a problem.
Are you talking about a neoprene wetsuit, drysuit, or semi-dry? Drysuit
would be fine, semidry you could probably do shortish dives in the South in
Winter, wetsuit I don't think i'd want to try personally, but depends how
well you can cope with the cold. You might as well bring your 7mm suit and
try it, if you find you are getting cold on the dives you are doing then you
can always consider getting yourself a drysuit at a later date.

Hi Jibaro..

Ill gues that you have knowledge about opencell suits and alike... a 7 mm
suit is enough, you dont get that much ice there do you ? Im using a 7mm top
, and a 5 mm bottom to dives of 3 hours in 0 celsius water, but its very
individual what you need..

www.spearfishing.dk under the forum, there is some UK spearfishers listet
there, they might give you a hand about their equipment and where you can go
spearfishing..

thanks everybody.

I'll try to dive with my suit. (wetsuit 7/5 mm)
I'm moving to UK,forced by work but I want to continue with this
wonderful sport.

I live and work in the north of Spain, and water temperature during
winter is about 10º-13º celsius, (in summer it reaches to 16º).

Today morning i've gone to dive, and water was about 14º, I spend
about 2 hours and a half, because my mate had problems with his suit.
We had fun, and we hunt a few pieces.

thank you very much for your answers.

PD: I'm going to stay in the water as much as possible before going to
the north

Thanks for your help

I'll try my suit in UK sea.

i'm living in north west coast of Spain, and water temperature is
about 11º-14ºcelsius during winter.
With my beuchat mundial wetsuit, 5/7 mm I can spend in the water
almost 4 hours.

i'm moving to UK for work reasons, and I'm glad to know that I'm going
to keep my hobbie.

In the brighton area these are ridiculous......

No way, stick with a wet suit. 7mm two piece is the norm, if you're planning
to do it all year around. Try to avoid zipped suits, go instead for
something like a set of long johns and a beaver flapped one piece top.

I have to confess to not having done it for a while, but I used to use a 7mm
one piece, semi watertight with a dry zip.

Makes me shiver just thinking about it! :O\

Actually, I have to admit to having never dived in UK waters in anything
other than a drysuit... although many of those had more water inside than
out! Still, i've seen the padi schools in Stoney with the instructor in his
nice warm drysuit and all the poor students in their semidrys... there must
be a reason for that, and I don't want to find out personally!
