Default U/W Photography

Just got back from Egypt where I was trying out the housing for my
camera for the first time. Took loads of pictures (approx 450) and
will probably have to throw about 300 or so of these away but some of
them came out pretty well (or so I think). I've had a go at enhancing
them and have got some results which I think are pretty good but was
wondering if anyone else has any top tips for enhancing photos which I
might have missed?

Oh yeah and the photos are online at www.waferthinmint.com

Thanks, Matt.

Please make sure that the program you are using puts the / in URL's
the right way around. I am getting \ instead of / and the pics are broken.

Er... works fine for me. Not a sign of a single '\' in all the URL links I'm
seeing...

Thats because you are using a browser which doesn't care about standards.

URLs should have forward slashes in them.

Huh?

When there is no ambiguity good software does what you
mean even if you get it slightly wrong. It is a poor
programmer who can't be a bit fuzzy on his UI and work
out what they meant to ask for.

Computers were made for man not man for the computer.

OK, apart from your backslash and forwardslash mistakes, (WHICH YOU
REALLY MUST FIX!) theres a lot you can do to enhance the images.

Firstly, you can get closer to the subject, take your fingers away from
the front of the camera and use a flashgun.

It's also not clear if these are scanned from prints or taken with a
digital camera... I'm guessing from the number of photos you say you took
it was digital though. You seem to have reduced them with a high jepg
loss factor - either that or there is a lot of CCD noise in some of them.

Fixing it up when you push the button is far better - prevention is better
than cure, and it gives you more to work with if you are pixel-pushing
afterwards ... However, have a look at:

http://www.drogon.net/doh/

Where I took one of them and applied some digital alchemy to
it. (Selective contrast enhancement, colour level adjustment and a degree
of sharpening, not neccessrily in that order!)

Gordon

Ps. Nigel - I do agree with your comments about making things easier,
eg. the number of web sites that won't let you enter spaces or dashes
with credit card number is just stuppidly high, but where there are
published standards I do feel it's important to stick to them, else who
knows what else might break in the future?

Hi. Thanks for the advice - Ive been and 'upgraded' a few of the
images...

OK. First, there is a caveat on the first page that assures people
that this is a temporary site and that I'm going to do it properly
when I get the chance (i.e. take more than 20 mins over it). I do take
the point that it isn't correctly coded but then it did only take me
20 mins.

Second, I was using an Olympus C-2 camera with the PT-011 housing. I
bought the camera about 2 years ago for £120 (you can pick one up for
about 30 squids on Ebay now) and the housing cost £90 inc. shipping
from www.smartimports.net

Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

Matt

But doing this would make the progranm do somthing other than is
described in tha standard for the internet. Should teh same be done
for hfs directory separators, vms separeators or isjust stupid
winows users that we need to fix problems for. My suggestion is that
there is no need to fix anything for any producers on content. If the
producers can't take the time to changes his producing of information
to follow the internet standrards, thebn they probaly don't have any
usefull and good information anyhow. (This way to see the internet
usally removes the most unseri8us sites....)

> Computers were made for man not man for the computer.

Yep, and compuetrs talk with each other in a standrad way. Why the
user has to get down into this layer and fuck things up is a wounder.
If you can't talk computer languge let someone else do that and use
programs that actually help you to comminicate with the computer in a
corect manner... If the editing software is broken, tghat use a better
one.
