Default Torch

I has just dawned on me that the trip I am doing at the
end of the month will exceeded the depth spec of any of
my current torches.

Sounds like time to go for a big butch macho umbilical.
Sounds like HID as I hear the newer ones have a good life
and don't throw a bulb if you sneeze nearby.

Before I part with my money any recommendations or just
website pointers? I need to get it ordered and in the
water before I go - getting to NN meters and realising I
can't remember how to switch it on could be very silly.

Also what do you deep divers do about backup light?
Preferably something not to fiscally exerting.

I've had a custom divers 10W HID for a few years now. Still on it's
first bulb. The canister sits in the top-weight pounch on my Inpsiration
(with a bit of shock cord to keep it there), so no need for any more
lead up there. Run time is over 4 hours, so thats basically an entire
weekends worth of diving.

Holycon have just released a new 10w HID for £340 which seems a bit of
a bargain (at least as far as Holycon go)

I have a Greenforce 20W HID Compact with the FII battery. It's been to 98m
last week, and it worked very well. I got it new for this season.

I went for the Greenforce for 2 reasons - the 20W is reasoanbly priced
(cheap even compared to some of the competition) and very robust. I know
many people with broken (expensive) HID bulbs due to dropping torches - I
don't know anyone who's broke a Greenforce bulb (although I'm sure you
could, if you tried hard enough). Greenforce seem to be very popular with
very few complaints.

I went for the Compact rather than the Impact because, although you can't
change the bulb yourself nor focus the beam for photography, I don't take
photo's, or care to carry a £100 spare blub with me. The price is about
£100 cheaper.

I went for a 20W because having watched many people with 10W, the extra
light output looked to be very worth while.

I went for the FII battery pack because it fits snuggly into the
wing-cylinder-pouch of my inspiration.

I bought mine from Diverswarehouse (http://www.diverswarehouse.co.uk), who
gave me a very good price.

Diverswarehouse usually have them in stock.

Simple twist mechanism, very secure, 3 o-ring seal.

Cheers

<Sits back and awaits the posts from all divers who were too thick to stop

Hi !
I'm setting up my business starting next september. Target is to build 20
watts HID for less than 300 £
have a look at the prototype here and tell me what you think, you will see
my 35 watts HID as well for less than 400£

Good thing about theses torchs is that, it is possible to switch from 10° to
100° reflector in no time and handles are ready to fit any models of camera,
needless to open the torch to charge the batteries.

click on the link and then click on "autres phares" in the left column.
Sorry it's in french but pictures speaks for themselves

Nigel,

I have been diving with a Dive Rite 10W HID for some time now: a small
canister (yet 4 hours burntime), with a small reflector.

The canister is great: small and light weight. It is attached to the harnass
"DIR style" and but it does not interfer with the counterlongs of my
Inspiration and does not affect my balance (which my previous lamp, a Metal
Sub did).

The amount of light is good, but could be better and I am thinking about
upgrading to a 18 W HID. If I do that, I will probably buy a 18W HID from
another brand, probably Sartec, and fit that with wet connectors to the
canister.(Dive Rite sells 18 W HID's, too, but the guy who sold me the lamp
warned me against that, it seems that DR 18 W HID's have a lot of problems
with the electronics).

A word of warning regarding the on-off switch. The switch is on top of the
canister and it has a protective outerhull (basically a PVC tube around the
switch). You need to remove that from the unit and shorten it with a file.

I paid about Euro 570 on the German Boat show.

is the advice on shortening the switch toggle to stop it getting turned off
by accident
as HID dont like restrikeing when hot.

If my torch would not turn back on while I was in a tight spot I would get
the file out and sort it.

The on / off toggle is flush with the collar at its highest point, except
for a 3mm deep semi-circular groove at the off position, (to aid switching
on). I guess its not very easy to accidently turn on / off. But I also
manage to operate it with 5mm gloves.
