For the record: Danny the fat B@st@rd Burchett was on the lift when it broke, however I will retell the full story of the happy incident. I swam onto the platform on the lift, I was trying to hand my dsmb to the skipper, he took this as an I want to be lifted signal..... As I am being lifted on my knees I am shouting stop (to be fair to him I still had my breather loop in but I would have thought I made enough noise for him to check), I was also shaking my head at him, he is ignoring me. When I got to the top, on my knees, fins and feet behind me I told the skipper there was no way that I could stand up from there with my fins on. He said "What do you want me to do?" I told him I needed to go back in to be able to get my feet on the platform. He then pushed a button on the lift then the winch made a nice, tensioning noise, the cable went very taught then I was in freefall. I can only presume that he pressed the up button rather than the down button. Thank God none of my fingers were between the deck and the lift. The skipper then decided to use the hand winch which had been repaired recently, and hadn't been tested, and didn't work. So Adrian and myself dekitted in the water and climbed back onto the boat (anyone else noticed how having only your drysuit on in open water without fins makes you feel horribly vulnerable?). On examination the 6mm steel hawser that was the winch cable was rusted to f*ck, the place where it had broken was where it would pass through the top of the frame when the lift was raised and hence get most abuse as the boat bounces. Few of the strands of the steel hawser had any signs of fresh breakage on them so the cable was already shagged, and the backup was untested. We did suggest that ladders are kind of reliable as a backup, not sure if it was taken on board though. Danny (who's loosing weight) Burchett The box said windows 98 or better, so I installed Linux Header is false, correct is Danny at danshome dot org |

It still counts as the most expensive dive that I have done per metre, and not one that I want to repeat as there was nothing at the bottom of the shot line except ....sand and rocks, strange absence of rusty metal. This seems like a recurring theme on the last 2 trips. Steve -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

I've already worked out that the 18/40 I had for the last trip is too high in O2 for my next trip for which I think I need 15/50? Need to borrow some tanks I think :( rich |
