Default Boat storage - where?

Having been informed today that we're going to lose our boat shed to a few
rugby boots and canoes, I'm in need of help!
Just to explain, i'm from Warwick Uni club, and we've been told today that
our boat shed 'could be put to better use', and we've got 30 days to get rid
of the boat. The boat is owned by our DO, but we've got (had) an agreement
that the club gets exclusive use of the boat and the Student's Union pays
for all of the servicing, insurance, storage, etc - something which has
worked out well for a lot of years.
Given that we don't want to get rid of the boat (even from 10 days in Oban
at Easter we saved enough on charter RIBs to pay for our RIB for a whole
year and have almost £300 left over), we're looking for alternative storage.

So my question: where can we store a 5m RIB that doesn't cost us thousands?
We'd need it to be in the Midlands somewhere, ideally in Coventry /
Leamington area. Basically what i'm getting at is where does everyone else
store their boats? Do you use rented garage space, if so how much would you
expect to pay for a year? Are boats owned personally and kept at home in
your own garages / drives, or do lots of clubs have purpose built boat
houses? It's come as a bit of a shock to us today, and we've got til the
11th August to find somewhere.

I'm planning on contacting local clubs as well, but any advice anyone can
give would be very much appreciated - we really can't afford not to have a
boat!

Cheers!

David

Ask Jenny Gillett if she'll store it at her mum & dad's house in Taunton!

Hehe - it may come to something like that, but for now we're trying to keep
it somewhere reasonably local - around half the diving we do from it is up
in Scotland so having to go the other way first to pick it up isn't ideal.
Like I said, this is something we've only just found out about, most of the
club committee won't even know about it yet. That'd be a nice surprise for
Jen - "we can't keep our boat at Uni anymore, so we're going to put it in
your garden"! :O)
Any more ideas?

David

Have you thought about contacting another Uni club?
I'm sure you could work out a reciprocal arrangement.

Has lots of good points with all divers being NUS and insured
through SU etc.

I've contacted the local ones, i'm going to see what happen with that before
looking further afield. I think ideally for now the priority is to simply
find storage locally for our boat - we must have that done fairly soon if we
are to keep it. Never thought yet about other options of being more closely
linked with other clubs, but its certainly worth us thinking about -
although I imagine the Union would take quite a bit of convincing to let us
spend money on anything that is shared with another club (they're useless!).
That said they have said that they don't want their decision to have an
impact on how the club operates and have said they'll give us support -
haven't told us what yet, may be a 'charter boat fund', might be a phone
book :O( Its just a shame this is all happening during our holidays when
we aren't in the area to go looking, and can't get the full committee
together to discuss what we can do.
Cheers for the suggestion anyway

David

Have you pointed this out to them and asked them to defer enforcing this
until everyone has come back and had a chance to look around and discuss
this next term? We were told that we were going to be charged for access to
the department where we've held our lectures since before I was involved
with my current club...but weren't told about it until after we'd had our
budget submission and grant application for next year authorised and after
most people had left for the summer. This was going to mean having to find
something like £3500 to cover the costs of the venue (or going elsewhere)
while not being in the area to do anything about it before next term.

Fortunately, the department in question were very reasonable and agreed to
waive the charges for this coming year, giving us time to work something
out.

What possible "better use" could the boat shed be put to?
Take the SU for a try dive!

Are there any local clubs who might be able to help you out, at least in the
short term?

Iain

Hmm... we used to use an old cow-shed on a local farm for storing boats...
overtime it accumulated other bits of junk such as old cylinders, bits of
old dive kit, anchors, cars and a VaxStation...

Might be worth looking about and seeing if you can come to an arrangement
with a friendly farmer?

Have you thought about trying some local farms? They may have
outbuildings not used for anything else that they are prepared to rent
out.

Alternatively, I'm sure we can find a boat shed...
It is, after all, something we're famous for...

Re-reading my post, I should make it absolutely clear that that was a
joke (before anybody lynches me).
