Default Non-neo hood

Hi,

I've been posting some articles about my neoprene allergy in the past to
this forum. I have a different question this time. I now use a Otter drysuit
without any trace of neoprne, which works fine for everything, except my
head. So far, I am still looking for a type of suitable hood that keeps my
head insulated, but doesn't bring neoprene in contact with my skin.

Does anyone have any suggestions or can point me in the right direction. I
had asked a drysuit supplier if they could make a neo-hood with a latex
lining, but they only wasted my time for most of this season, as they
claimed it was done and in the post ... for the last four month and it's
still in the post.
My LDS tried glueing a number of latex strips into a standard hood, but it
didn't cover the area around the face and neck, which didn't help and I am
sitting here tearing the skin of my face after my last and brief shore dive
to try it.

Any help is appreciated. I don't want to be forced to have to give up diving
because of a bloody chemical accellerator in wetsuit material.

Cheers,

Marcus

I have seen nylon inner hoods that are designed to allow easy donning of a
neoprene hood, particularly for anyone with long hair. Alternatively, can
you find a latex hood of the sort that were fitted to Viking drysuits, and
wear that under a neoprene hood?

Cliff.

My Oceanic hood is neoprene but has an inner coating of some kind to
make it easy to put on and take off. Not sure what the lining is made
of, but it's certainly not neoprene. The upshot is that none of me is
in contact with the neoprene while it is on.

Not sure what type of Oceanic hood it is, but it's the one that they
give you when you buy an Oceanic Aerdura drysuit. Might be worth a
try ?

Why not just get a latex dry-hood attached to your drysuit? You then wear
a fleecy hat under it and the latex outer keeps you dry. I know 2 divers
who use this arrangement with good success - I think they are on this
weekend UKRS trip so I'll ask them where they get them if I remember..

'COUGH ' COUGH, 'COUGH,

All this fancy new-fangled 'neoprene' stuff, huh, in my day we had only
three choices:

1. Several woolly jumpers over a couple of string vests and fisherman's
waders, topped off with a heavy woollen hat with lots of the natural lanolin
still in the wool.
2. Goose fat
3. Rubber and leather suits with lead boots & a big copper helmet (on your
head, not as a prophylactic).

It didn't do us any harm (except for the hypothermia, cramps, crushed spine,
deafness, blindness, paralysis and sometimes 9if you weren't especially
careful) an early grave.

You youngsters don't know the meaning of a challenge!

I sometimes use a hood from Reed, part of their Chill Cheater range..
it's surprisingly warm for what it is.. though I don't think I've used
it below 13DegC yet..
