| > I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry, so I'm doing both. Absolutely nothing to laugh about. The so called Lobster Liberation Front, threatens the livelihood and safety of fishermen. Their actions also endanger scuba diving as a sport. As we all know there is a minority of divers who probably support the actions of the arseholes described in the article. If destruction on this scale was repeated at a popular diving site, then the animosity generated could potentially make the site undiveable. The diving community should condemn the actions of these arseholes and make it know that any tampering, by divers, of static fishing gear is completely unacceptable. We don't want the diving community associated or to suffer due to the actions of these arseholes. Sadly however, I recently heard reports that a diver has tampered with static fishing gear (lobster pots) in a popular northern location. Any diver who has ever tampered with static fishing gear would do well to remember that it is nearly always thees same local fishermen, who they have endangered, that man the local lifeboat. Some day your life may depend on the selfless assistance of a fisherman that you've treated like shite! |

I dive in a fishing community and this question of stealing from lobster pots comes up occasionally, I know that to do it and be caught would be very dangerous. Having been a member of the local lifeboat crew, I must point out that the number of fishermen in the crews is minimal these days, as the fishermen usually have a day job that means they are unavailable for call outs. -- Steve Barlow |

A few incidents of gear tampering by divers are recorded, locally, every year. Considering that the number of people who dive locally every weekend runs well into three figures. The majority of divers are obviously responsible and law abiding. However these few isolated incidents do have a major effect on the relationship between fishermen and divers. If an incident perpetrated by rouge divers occurred locally, on a similar scale to that reported in the article, (worst cast scenario) then I can easily imagine a response which would see the closure of access to some of the country's best shore diving. Hence the need for the diving community to distance itself from the actions of these terrorists. The community should, where possible, be self policing. It you dive with an individual who has tampered with static fishing gear then a quiet word is in order. It the individual persist in their illegal actions then you should avoid diving in their company and if they are a member of your club, expel the bastard. >> > Having been a member of the local lifeboat crew, I must point out that the > number of fishermen in the crews is minimal these days, as the fishermen usually > have a day job that means they are unavailable for call outs. We obviously live in different parts of the country, the vast majority of the local crew are fishermen with the majority of callouts to assist divers. |

| Please feel free to advise the Lobster Liberation Front that we, here in the States, also catch lobster. Further, I encourage you to suggest that we, too, could use some help from those so willing to act on their beliefs and to protect that which they hold dear. These are characteristics that we, here in the States, value highly and strive to uphold. Of course, we also believe in the right to keep and bear arms and the right to protect our family, livelihood and property. The "Front" is welcome, but it will be a bit like the "Roach Hotel" of a few years ago. They can check in, but they won't be checking out. Lee |
