For your amusment. In a message to BA I said: "Message: It seems from your website that my wife and I do not qualify for an extra baggage allowance as scuba divers, and our diving equipment has to be a part of our 23kg allowance (travelling to Australia, "World Traveller"class). Have I read this correctly? If so, may I point-out the injustice of this? My wife and I are of average weight, but have only the same baggage allowance as obese people weighing twice as much. There has been some talk recently of airlines imposing a surcharge for obese people; you may add my name to those who would support such a move wholeheartedly." To which BA replied: <basically the same stuff as it says on the website> I have now replied: I see the cut & paste fairy at work here: that's remarkably similar to what it says on your website. And my comments about fatties? I'll keep you posted with any further communications from the BA bots. Actually, it turns out I got it wrong: we're actually travelling with QANTAS, whose total allowance is only 20kg, with similar terms to BA. We're toying with the idea of boarding the aircraft in our suits and BCDs, saying that they're "overcoats".

20kg baggage allowance to Oz ? They ARE taking the p*ss This is a good one - I'm flying on a charter out of Bristol to Sardinia on 28th with an airline called OLT - they are German. On emailing them to ask about a luggage upgrade, I was told that they couldn't accept me on the flight because it was only staff that went to Bremen !! As it happens after I sorted it out with the travel agent they charge about £9/kilo if there is no weight allowance left from other people's luggage, but other than that it's free. I'm having to use the fish scales (no put intended) to ensure I distribute the gear around the hand luggage, that always helps Chrystianne "NoJags Neil" <neil264@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:2nf6i8F94vhU1@uni-berlin.de... > For your amusment. > In a message to BA I said: > > "Message: It seems from your website that my wife and I do not qualify for > an extra baggage allowance as scuba divers, and our diving equipment has to > be a part of our 23kg allowance (travelling to Australia, "World > Traveller"class). Even Ryanair has progressed to 10kg hand, (only 15kg hold) - but if you purchase an extra seat (either for comfort/carry an musical instrument etc) then although they charge you the same price (current adult fare) you do not get the associated baggage allowance - and they will still charge you £4.50 kg over the weight allowance.

I will never, never, EVER fly with Ryanair, even if the world was on fire. VERY bad experience, and you get no compensation, not even an apology, when the plane you can see you have booked a seat on is on the runway and is boarding passengers and the staff ask you to wait and the plane takes off. The next plane was 12 hours hence, and didn't go to Oslo either. Somewhere called Torp, a 3-hour train ride away, and all the connecting flights had to be re-arranged. Well... were you late for check-in? I'm no fan of Ryanair myself, but all these low-cost outfits operate to very tight turnaround schedules... if you don't make it to check-in on time you simply won't be allowed on. You may be thinking 'I could see the damn plane, I could be out there before the end of the queue made it on board' but non-aviation people don't understand the importance of paperwork, loadsheet, weight & balance stuff that has to be right before departure... once that paperwork is done, checked, cross-checked, and signed-off, it's *done* and it's too late to add a latecomer. Of course if you checked-in on time and they simply overbooked or screwed-up in some other fashion, forget the above! Airport screens showed delayed till 3.30pm. Had a look around shops - arrived gate 2.45pm Plane going - not allowed on - watched our bags being taken off.. Around 25 passengers missed it. Ryan Air desks said we should not have believed the airport screens as they are nothing to do with Ryan Air. No apology. No concern. No nothing. They obviously play a numbers game, assuming that poor customer service wont piss enough people off to affect their business - In fact, their owner tends to make this clear whenever he is interviewed on these matters. -- Richard Faulkner

Situation where it's better to be an optimist than a pessimist. Pessimist says 'bugger it, that probably means 3.30pm for 5pm. I'm going to shops/boozer/whatever'. Optimist says 'OK 3.30pm, but maybe they'll fix the problem, I'll wait at the gate'. It *does* happen that they can rearrange a new slot and get away less late than they predicted - sounds like that's what happened here. Of course they need to update the screens and make copious announcements for pax who have wandered off to get arses to gate pronto, sounds like that was the screwup here. But always check with the gate before wandering! >They obviously play a numbers game, assuming that poor customer service >wont piss enough people off to affect their business - In fact, their >owner tends to make this clear whenever he is interviewed on these >matters. On that I would entirely agree. As I said, I'm no fan of Ryanair - the Ratner of airlines! (and I was flying with them when they consisted of a couple of owld BAC 1-11s and a couple of portakabins at Stansted!) | Well i just flew back from cyprus with cyp airlines and WAS allowed an excess of 20kg for my diving gear. Which considering i was already 15kg baggage and diving gear overweight, they did NOT charge me..... I would fly cyprus airlines all day long...fantastic i say..... |

Cyprus Air allow an extra 20kg for dive kit, thats in addition to 20kg personal allowance. I flew out to Cyprus in June and for a two of us we had a total weight allowance of 40kg personal and 40kg dive kit. We didn't need all that, but nice to know we could take out all our dive kit without any hassle. However, some of our group had a problem when coming home and had to pay excess baggage----- just something to be aware of.... I used to be in the aviation industry and used to get to hear about things on the grapevine. Apparently one of the "interesting" things about the Kegworth crash was that all the overhead lockers came down. WRT the low cost airlines, my missus had a terrible experience with Easyjet too. Neither of us would ever use them again, but then again, we're in a cosy financial situation where we don't need to. It's important to bear in mind that some people have to either do it that way or stay at home. I'm going to ring QANTAS tomorrow and try to negotiate something. How do you get down on your knees on a phone call?
