Default Swanage.

Okay after a weekend of hairylairyness; other than "divers doom" where can
Nitrox fills be obtained in the area?

There's Forward Diving at Poole - not exactly on the doorstep though.

That's Jasons' (Bardos') thunder; he organised it and it's not mine to

Just come back from there myself, and a couple of people in our group found
getting nitrox just about impossible - dropped the tanks in to be filled at
just before 11am, they were told at 3pm that it'd be unlikely they'd be
ready by 4pm (when the boat went out again), and on reaching 4pm one was
almost full (although with the wrong mix), the other had a mysterious
leaking valve which had never been a problem before.
Unfortunately from what we could find, including asking our skipper, there
isn't any real alternative. That's the first time i've been to Swanage, and
until there's a new dive shop I won't be hurrying back - by far the worst
dive shop i've ever had the misfortune to have to use. Haven't decided
whether this is good or bad yet, but at least it isn't just us they're crap
with - couldn't find anyone with a good word to say about them all weekend,
people late for dives because they can't get air is seemingly far too
common. I suppose if they're crap and everyone knows they're crap they
might improve... but from the people working there this weekend (who have
absolutely no interest in talking to customers, or in fact doing much of
anything) I can't see it getting better.

On the other hand, had some fantastic dives on the Kyarra and something else
I can't remember the name of (if anyone knows the name of another wreck, in
about 30m near the Kyarra, a submarine detector or something, began with 'K'
I think, please let me know). I was expecting more from the pier, must just
be wrong time of year...

Hehe. Yes, that'll be our Johnny - he was part of our group this weekend.
John got so dicked around by Divers Doom that he had to sack his second dive
as he simply had no gas, despite putting his twinset in for filling a good 3
hours before we were due to set out again. My personal opinion of Divers
Doom couldn't be lower - never have I had the displeasure of dealing with
such a rude, arrogant and unhelpful shower of b*stards...

Hehe. Ask me again and I might *really* tell you what I think of them!

Yeah that's the one - knew I didn't just imagine it :O)

We did it Sunday morning - I think if you were all on twins and rebreathers
and other posh things then you'd have seen it all and got bored, but it was
a perfect dive for a single 12. Perfect size wreck to get around on a
single tank, see everything and have a good amount of time to look without
getting bored, and at the right depth so that only a few minutes into deco
you're running out of air anyway. Lots of holes to peer in, lots of nice
fishies (apparently it isn't fished much), but there seems to be just one
long thin stretch of wreck, standing around 2m up from the sea bed along its
length... although there may be more we missed.
Kyarra was a really fantastic dive (well, 2 of them) though, couldn't
believe how huge it was,and I think there's more fish there (big ones too)
than i've seen on any other wreck in the UK.

In 55 hours of my weekend, I spent over 16 driving... but it was worth it!
:O)

Now now, as discussed; when you can get a cup of tea from Chichester faster
than you can from the on-site facility....

Friday was bad organisation, nobody about to man the shop whilst conducting
diver training; but not unusual.

Saturday was down to circumstance, I saw all of this, some points; the
owners of Divers Doom weren't onsite, that was an appointed manager.

The Air Fill station was _unbearably_ hot, to the point that I believe that
it should have been shut down, so even with both doors open the staff
continued to do their best.

There are no water buckets to cool fills, nor as far as I could see any
_working_ banks and I think everyone will agree it was a lovely hot
day...... The staff - also known as unpaid volunteers, were equally as hot
and frustrated by the hordes of divers that were unable to follow simple
instructions or follow a simple system, constantly moaning divers and
continuously whinging/bitching divers, they were going as fast as they
could - noone could say they saw a point that they weren't filling - infact
they were doing the best they could with what they had, one compressor down
as the skipper later informed us.

Now as they say "man without smile shouldn't open shop" but it was very much
a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other, some consideration on
either side would have defused the situation instead of me jumping
inbetween, personally I wasn't suprised when with all those cylinders empty
and waiting they descided not to accept anymore - it ended a lose/lose for
all involved and the requirement for a second diveshop is clear.

Best

/F

Been out of Poole myself for the past two weeks diving with John
Sturch. Had a couple of really good dives on the Kyarra. The good
thing about it is that as long as you are dropped in on slack you can
spend as much time as you like on the wreck. We got 70 mins on the
wreck the first visit and 85 mins on the second. There are loads of
holes to get into and have a good mooch. It seems the conga has moved
from the boiler and is now resident in one of the bow holds. I also
saw a few other congas on other parts of the wreck. After the second
dive, the current was ripping somewhat and as I bagged off and the
blob went horizontal, my thought went something like this:

(i) I hope this line is tied on to the reel.
(ii) Great it is!
(iii) Shite, it's slipping around the reel.

As far the gas issue, I must confess, I had no problems with any of
the filling stations. This was probably because I took all my gas
with me
