Default Diving on the coast- Whitby/Redcar

Hello all,

I have not dived the coast of Yorkshire before and will be near Whitby and
Redcar this weekend. I was wondering if anybody could tell me a little about
any shore dives - I dont want to have to hire a boat in case I can't make
the dive afterall - so a walk in shore dive would be best.

If anybody could help with these two areas I would be most grateful.

Many thanks,

Jay

P.s. Have a good bank holiday weekend.

The shore diving at Redcar front can be very good albeit shallow off the
shore. There are rock "scars" going out to sea that can be used to get
into deeper water, but don't expect much depth, I've logged 4m off the
shore but it was a delightful dive off East scar. Deeper water can be
had off the South Gare, which is the South breakwater of the Tees
estuary. It can be dived on the river side, or the sea side.
For the river side, drive as far as poss and then walk along to a small
Concrete L shaped jetty that goes out and then left, enter on the lhs
down a perilous concrete slippery slope at low tide or just jump in at
high tide. The dive over boulders slopes gradually down to 12 m or so
and then shelves steeply into the channel. The thrum of heavy marine
diesels from passing ships is entertaining, and see if you can avoid the
irrational fear of being sucked up be the Tees Dredger. Bugger, said it
now)Lots of lobsters, crabs fish ov various types. Entry on sea side
down a slip a hundred yards or more. Suss it out without the aqualung.
Can dive along the edge of the Gare it's self amongst the concrete
blocks, or venture out on to the sand for dragonets etc. I've probably
dived here 10 to 15 times and would do it again if I still lived locally.
Denney Diving is on the seafront on the East side of town. Website has a
webcam and info about local diving, as well as personal local knowledge.

I picked up a diagram of the scars years ago and it either came from
Denneys or the lifeboat museum, can't remember which.
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers
Graham

I too have dived of the sea side of the south gare and found it good shore
dive, although it is quite a walk from were you can park (but dont let that
put you off as it is worth it) the best advice i can give is to call in at
Denney Diving as this is were we learnt of the south gare, we were just on a
ride out on day having decided against a shore dive at Staithes, Denney
diving will be able to point you in the direction of south gare, as they did
us, as for a stranger to the area it is not easy to find the 1st time you
visit. Incidently, the group of green fishermens huts as quiet an
interesting sight, I can imagine many a fisherman sat there in his hut with
the fire going escaping her indoors. getting back to diving, have fun and
like i said earlier call in at Denney Diving for directions, as the previous
repley mentioned they also have maps of the reefs on the beach opposite
them, although i have no experience of diving these.
Mark.
