Is it really worth 60 quid to somebody who only dives when abroad (which makes trimix diving rarther unlikely)? Surely another option (if you really wanted it) would be to buy a Uwatec D-Timer as a backup, which provides the 'gauge mode' if you ever wanted it, and a backup on the dive should you need it? Although of course its another £60 or so to get the 'official' hardware to link it, but you can make your own for a few £ - and I definitely like having it, wouldn't want to lose it even to save £60 or so. Given the amount of diving I do (a few weeks a year), that may well be the one for me. I quote like the Vytec, but as I don't have my own reg, the pressure transmitter wouldn't be much use (I assume it can't just be attached and detached to the shop's kit). -- David Mahon |

Shouldn't be a big problem - it should just screw in and out. OTOH, I personally don't see the point in paying £££ for a contents gauge. Iain |

I would NOT buy a dive computer without download facility, because it is a major benefit in logging your dives, allowing you (and more experienced divers) to analyse the dive and may be useful in a DCI incident by the hyperbaric doctors. I fully agree that £60-£80 is well spent on a dive timer, and that is exactly what I have as a backup device. |

You're dead right about the first half - the gekko does not have a user download function, but I thought that chambers have been issued with software to download them (it requires some sort of software key as I understand it)? I'm sure someone else will be able to tell us the details... Ben -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ben Panter, Edinburgh, UK email is false. Yep definitely remember hearing that from somewhere - just like lots of stuff you buy really, physically identical, costs exactly the same to make, but chuck a different label on and a couple of very quick changes in software and sell it at a different price to a different part of the market. Makes good sense really. David |

A lot of the stuff from the sites I've looked at is available from the US is available including VAT and postage charges (and priced in pounds) You can save about 100 quid on a titanium stinger but the rest make it not really worth it. As I'm off to Hurghada soon, anyone know what prices are like over there? Am now wishing I'd bought one in Male airport (but it would have pissed me off at the time - buying one on the way home from the holiday). -- David Mahon |
