Default Basic u/w camera

Have previously used a basic u/w camera (remember the old vivitar 35m with
housing)

Results were as you would expect flaky. OK in clear water at a couple of
mtrs, and poorer results at depth (blue cast)

Now the time has come to upgrade. Options are

1) Buy a "cheap" camera/housing/strobe (maybe secondhand?)
2) Buy a housing and strobe for my existing digital camera (Canon S10)
3) Buy a "cheap" digital camera and strobe and u/water housing.

As far as I can tell digital is still not widely used for u/water
photography, so option 1 seems the most likely option.

Can anyone recommend a setup keeping cost low but with reasonable results
for the cost?

Not sure if that's true. My experience is that although pro level
photographers still use film, most people who just play about use
digital. It allows you to see what you're doing when you're doing it,
and the lack of development costs (although do think about batteries...)
means that you can shoot a hundred photos, delete them all and shoot a
hundred more with what you've learnt.

I'm not au-fait with what the best deals are at the moment, but I
recommend getting a housing which allows you to use all the buttons on
your camera... or alternativly get a new camera/housing if you prefer
not to risk your current camera.

In terms of strobes, I've had lots of (to me) sucesses without one, but
I'd like to get one...

ok, just had a quick squint on camerasunderwater. the only option they list
for the s10 is the boil-in-the-bag thingy. tried the aquapac a few years ago
with my cheap (at the time, expensive now!) fuji. fine for shallow depths of
a few metres, hard work after that as the pressure has a habit of pushing
the buttons and if you need to operate any slide switches (e.g. power) then
it's difficult any deeper than 3-5m.

Whoops, what am I on? My camera is the S30 not the S10. There is a houseing
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d...n/wpdc300.html so it is an
option? What about insurance for a flooded digital?

There are "quite a few" pro level photographers using digital. Paul
Kay, Alex Mustard, etc etc.

Natural light shots can work, I did some last week in the depths of
Vobster.

I insured mine with Dive Master Insurance, £40~£50 if I remeber coprrectly.
Very useful though as it flooded in the Maldives. Luckliiy the day after the
Whale Shark.

After sending a repair estimate they offered to replace it with an Olympus
C-60 and housing or give me £330. I took the money and have bought a C-5060
and all the kit!!!!
