I dove in Hurghada within the Giftun National Park area (had to pay a couple of pounds per day extra for those dives). No such limit was mentioned and the majority of people on the boat had not logged 50 dives. Part of my dive went down to 32 metres but the OW divers stayed above 20. To be honest, on almost all of my dives in the Red Sea there was little worth seeing below 20m anyway and the best stuff was above 10! This has been my experience on most of my dives, except wrecks (where the depth of the wreck is the most important) and where I went looking for big fish (hammerheads in particular). -- David Mahon |

| Can't find anything to say that you need a minimum number of dives to dive in Ras Mohammed but you will probably have to do a "check dive" with your operator to make sure you aren't going to trample the coral. All divers are limited to 30m by law (unless on a specifically aranged technical dive). Most of the dive sites are wall dives, therefore your 18m depth limit will not be a problem as you can just stay above 18m and not miss much..... The vast majority of the wrecks are deeper than 18m. Only there's an interesting letter in Diver this month that goes on to say that no Diver, Dive Master or Instructor is qualified to 40m unless he or she has completed the course. I only ask because it's been discussed on here before and it always comes down to the depth limit versus recommended depth arguement which seems to be a grey area. Whenever I've adverstised boat spaces I've stipulated that if it's a 40m dive Padi divers are very welcome but must have this qualification. I was then told that this was a recommendation and not mandatory. Of course the guy who wrote the letter could be wrong. |
