In general recreational divers have a minimal effect on scallops or wildlife. They do destroy wrecks however but the real destruction comes from mobile fishing,(scallop dredging and trawling). The other big killer of lobsters and crayfish is the bottom set tangle net, these also catch porpoise. The recent banning of dredging due to Amnesic Shellfish Poison scares resulted in more fish and shellfish being caught in static gear. A sure sign of increased numbers. The no catch zone is like stopping road accidents by banning cars. -- Steve Barlow |

| Dived on the bay side of the island years ago it "was" great, lots of life, marine growth and scallops of all sizes. Went back the next year to a barren muddy bottom, I heard locally that the scallop boats had dredged the area. So disappointed I've never been back. | Dear All, You may have seen the BBC program some months back on the action of some divers and concerned residents on Arran about fishing in Lamlash Bay. The Community of Arran Seabed Trust, COAST, are attempting to create a no-take zone in this area. This will hopefully restore the underwater fauna to its previous glory and improve fish stocks elsewhere in the Clyde, providing benefits both to divers and fishermen. This is a contentious issue, and there are of course two sides to the argument. On balance my feeling is that it is a good plan, but you have to make your own mind up. There is an official petition to the Scottish Parliament, hosted by the Parliament itself, in support of this action. If you feel that way inclined, the petition is at: http://epetitions.scottish.parliamen...asp?TopicID=37 Anyone is welcome to sign, but of course those with an address in Scotland are particulally sought. Cheers, Ben BBC Article - "Bee in your Bonnet": http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/ican/coast COAST Website: http://arrancoast.co.uk/ Petition Statement: The petitioner requests that the Scottish Parliament supports COAST’s proposals to close an area of Lamlash Bay to all forms of marine life extraction [No Take Zone] and the rest of the Bay to mobile fishing gear [Marine Protected Area]. COAST believes that this trial will enable marine life, including whitefish, flatfish and scallops to regenerate, ultimately benefiting the local marine environment, local economy and, through spillover of species from the NTZ, the Clyde fishermen. -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ben Panter, Edinburgh, UK email is false.
