Don't hurry with kit. It can be expensive to discover
you bought what you were told and then discover it doesn't
suit the sort of diving you end up wanting to do.
Hire whenever possible at first.

Diving Clubs?

Well the ones I know about are
http://www.ukrecscuba.org.uk/links/l...#UK_dive_clubs
and there are shops listed there too (change page)

There are more, PADI shops in Yellow Pages, British Sub-Aqua Club
branches via http://www.bsac.com/ and the Sub Aqua Association
via http://www.saa.org.uk/

Find somewhere and go and talk. Sadly there are clubs that don't
dive much but talk a good dive so see the diving schedule for
this year not the plans for what might happen next year.

OWD is just a beginning but it gets you in the water. There is
lots of diving in the UK. It may be different from that which
you have done already but it suits us. Have fun!

There really isn't that much to add to Nigel's post. Just take your time,
find the right diving envirnonment (club, school, mates or whatever - I
didn't mean just water, obviously) for you.

Which ever route you go down get more training and experience wherever and
whenever you can.

If you must buy kit now, just get the basics - mask, fins (and boots) and
snorkel. That way you can take them on holiday and snorkel when you are not
diving, lend them to whoever you are on holiday with and start to get them
hooked! The rest, as Nigel says you should try, borrow, beg (don't steal,
its bad) before you buy your own - it is not cheap and buying twice gets you
down.

Good luck finding an organisation to dive with, and have fun!
