How do you plan to obtain a repersentative sample of scuba divers out of the population at large? I ask, because I have had problems making such a selection to even give a honest estimate of the number of active divers and the amount of diving going on. I ended using compressor hours in compressor vendors service logs as an estimate of the diving activity. Just to hint of the problems involved. >Just ordinary people enjoying a sport. We're not sky divers you know. Sky divers are a lot easier to count. You need officially sanctioned aircraft on officially logged trips to sky dive. -- mrr |

Ive been diving for years and met the complete range of people from nutters to exceptionally nice sensible people. The inherent need to count and categorise people's characters tells you nothing about those who take part in the sport. If you really want to know about people - go ask them face to face. If you want to know about why 'alledged' dangerous sports are on the increase I susgest you read: Beck, U. (1992) RISK SOCIETY : TOWARDS A NEW MODERNITY. London : Sage. On the problem of using surveys over interviews try: Bellaby, P., Lawrenson, D. (2001) 'APPROACHES TO THE RISK OF RIDING MOTORCYCLES : REFLECTIONS ON THE PROBLEM OF RECONCILING STATISTICAL RISK ASSESSMENT AND MOTOCYCLISTS' OWN REASONS FOR RIDING', The Sociological Review, 49 (3):368-388 It's a real eye opener. |
