People say this, but it's never been my experience. If I show my trimix
card, there's a fair chance that half the people don't understand what it
means. I've also been asked if CMAS 3* was the same as AOW.

Showing a DM card has never got me lumbered with someone I need to look
after, usually it's quite the opposite. They find me someone experienced
so that I won't have to get out of the water with most of my air left.

But then, if they did try to get me to look after someone, I'd say no. And
I think most people who know me would agree that it's pretty obvious that
would be my response even if you've only just met me.

Had one guy in Barbados. He was a rescue diver. He did his OW one year,
his AOW the next year, his rescue diver the year after and 2 dives in a
quarry. So basically had 11 dives over 3 years. Not surprisingly he was a
complete muppet.

However, I also dived with a Dutch girl in Australia who had done her OW,
then not dived for 9 months and couldn't remember how to put her reg on
properly. And she was fine when she got in the water.

That depends on what you tell the opperator. I tell them that I will not
accept a buddy who does not have a reasonal ability as a diver (usually
rescue and 10 to 20 recent dives minimum) unless they are going to
either pay me or greatly reduce the cost of the dive trip. As I am
paying full, or near full, price for the trip I have never been given a
buddy who needed babysitting / teaching attention. None of my buddies
have suggested that they were unhappy with me.

You are a customer not an employee so you do not have any need to accept
a 2nd rate trip because the dive shop is not willing to supply / charge
for the proffesional services other divers may need, or is not willing
to tell poor divers that that the must have a DM/instructor buddy and
pay for it.

The viz had been bad all winter, not over 7 meters.at least not any
time when I have gotten down in the water. Warm weather, storms and
raining have destroyed it... And now the algies have started... below
a meter around the surface, night diving around the clock :^)
