Imagine the scene.

There's a wreck off the North West coast of Mull. It's a lovely first,
second, third or even fourth dive. Jeff was diving it for his first time and
early on in the dive came across a port hole. It was still attached to a
large chunk of the ship and a bit battered but Jeff wanted it. He spent
about an hour and half trying to get it off. His buddy even left him alone.
Jeff finally got the thing loose and contemplated how he was going to get it
up. He was unprepared and had no lifting bag. From somewhere on the wreck he
found a discarded anchor with its rope still attached. He promptly removed
the rope and tied one end to his new port hole and surfaced. Not before time
because he was running out of air. This is when Jeff realised that 14mtr of
rope tied to a lump of brass in 16mtr of water was problematic. Fortunately
there was a 2mtr ground swell so for ten seconds his head was out of the
water and then for the next ten seconds his head was under the water.
Dragging the port hole to the boat was just too tiring and he soon used up
the last of his air. He reached the boat and out of sheer desperation lunged
for the ladder and passed the end of the rope to the first person he saw.
The boats roll was helping but as the boat rolled back the other way the
short piece of rope was pulled from the helpers hand and the thing was gone.
Jeff's pride and joy was gone and all he had to show for it was rope burns
on his hand. The other divers on board kept out of his way for an hour or
two after.
