i went the usa way, last august, which is low season for chuuk the beginning
of the rainy season although it only ever rained in the night while i was
there.
it took 28 hours of flying time to get there and it was worth every penny
and i'd go again tomorrow. my advice is BOOK IT NOW!
seriously tho if i went again i'd go the 'other way' round (eastern way)
i stayed at the blue lagoon resort which is the best accomodation in chuuk,
comfortable, tv, bar, ensuite, etc...100meters from the dive shop,
a word of warning if your thinking of going on liveaboard, one liveaboard
(dont know the name of it) boat was moored up about 200meters off the hotel
grounds and never moved all the week i was there, their diving was all done
off little motor boats, the same as we did and i believe they charge a fair
bit more for a liveabord than a hotel....
and need i tell you, the diving was the best! better than my wildest wet
dreams then X 1000. 3 different 500ft long intact wrecks per day..... i
could go on but i'm sure you get the gist of it....

I've been twice...on the liveaboard you mention, sounds like the Thorfinn.
The Thorfinn did move to the other end of the Lagoon on both of my visits
but it ages to brew up steam to move! The Thorfinn sends groups of divers
in aluminium tenders to differant wrecks so usually there are no more than 6
or 7 divers per wreck. I don't know how many dives you get as part of a
Hotel based package but we got 5 per day, bit of a long way for 2.

The first time I went a group of us went via Manilla and second time via
Hawaii. Manilla was interesting for one stop but not again!! We stopped a
couple of days in Hawaii on the way back this time and got some more dives
in.

The journey was long but worth it when you arrive!

If I was to go again I would probally use the Truk Aggressor, newer boat
etc. but the Thorfinn has nearly one member of staff per diver, on suite
bathrooms etc etc but was looking a bit tired and in need of a refit when I
went a couple of years ago.

Your equipment is set up and loaded/unloaded onto the tenders all you have
to do is turn up at your tender at the correct time and dive!
