| Me and my partner did a DIY trip out there about 4 years ago. We flew gatwick-raleigh durham with american airlines: good service, wide seats and large baggage allowance. We stayed in a wee flat in Beaufort - a quiet wee town, but with several nice bars on the front and we were only 1/4 mile from Discovery Diving who we used. Unfortunately, we only got a couple of dives in, as the wrecks are all well offshore and so subject to big swells (Strong surge at 35m). Those that we did were good, though no sandtiger sharks :o( They also tie into the wreck: Some poor sod of a boat boy has to jump in with a full face mask, comms, and a length of chain attached to the boat and ties the boat in. Because of the potentially strong currents, they ask you to come back up the line - makes things a bit interesting coming up the ladder! DD were excellent - although we'd payed upfront for 5 days diving, they refunded us for the days lost to weather. On the non diving days we went to some old civil war fort, saw artifacts from the Queen Anns Revenge (Blackbeards ship), went to Cape Fear and bimbled along the beach at Kitty Hawk. Culturally it is quite interesting - the local shop kept live worms for fish bait in the fridge with the dairy produce & we are still looking for recipes that will do justice to the 2 cans of pork brains in milk we brought back! Would we go back? Yes! Was it easy to arrange ourselves? Yes. HTH Clive |
