| Anyone been diving in Lake Michigan? My son is stationed at the Great Lakes, IL Naval Recruit Training Command and graduates from boot camp in November. I am thinking about heading up a few days early and trying to get in a dive or two. He is stationed at the far northeast corner of Illinois. I dive California (where I live) and I have a drysuit, etc. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Tessa |

Quite an impressive amount of time there really... Probably thousands of hours... -- "Please! Spay and Neuter Your Democrats!" |

I doubt you'll find a charter that will take you out to a wreck site that time of year but don't let that stop you from trying. If you do find a charter boat that will take you out, let me know. I might join you. |

Google the area where you are staying for the availability of dive charters, assuming you want to boat dive. There are many options available. Shore diving is a bit more difficult. You can contact local dive shops and ask where they go. The end of September I did four wreck dives in northern Lake Michigan. The water temperature ranged between 52 and 60 degrees, visibility was good, and the charter was booked in advance. A year or two ago I went out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Same general conditions and lots of wrecks to see. Illinois divers routinely come north to Wisconsin or Michigan but there are opportunities in Illinois as well. Much depends on the weather. Do not despair as there are wonderful diving days in November, December, and even January in this part of the country. Bring and use adequate insulation. This time of year the heat is leaving the water. It will not stay 50+ degrees at 100+ feet deep. Enjoy your trip and have fun diving. |

I was starting to think that it wasn't going to be possible. I have emailed a few LDS, still waiting to hear back from them. 50 degrees is what I am used to here in CA, so hopefully I can find a charter. It looks like there is one dive shop that has booked trips all through the month of October, so I have my fingers crossed that I can get in one day of diving. Thanks again for all the information y'all. |

So, you're used to freezing your 'nads off... Just remember though, up in the Chicago area, you don't make an "OK" sign by touching your hand to the top of your head -- you flip 'em the bird and yell "Up Yours!"... That's the Chicago way of saying "OK", "Hello", and a bunch of other greetings... Kind of a multipurpose hand signal... So, where is your son going after Great Lakes? I was stationed on the main base for ET "A" School around 1980-1981... Cold fuckin' winters up there... Hell, even during the 'summer' (all 3 hours of it), the water is still pretty fuckin' cold up there... Well, first of all...wrong body parts, I don't have nad's - LOL I will be freezing other things off I guess? He is going through the Nuke program after he leaves the Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes. I guess he will go 2 years to school in South Carolina and then 4 years on a ship or submarine. He made it into the nuclear power program, so he had to sign up for 6 years. Smart kid, and mom gets to go diving in the Carolinas when visiting ; ) I am trying to talk him into going to Hawaii, he is also a diver, so that would be cool to get stationed somewhere that I can visit and dive with him. Cool photo, thanks. I will remember your advice and make sure I pronounce it correctly and use the "correct" signals. I am hoping it isn't going to be too much colder than CA? I dive in 47-53 degree water usually. I still haven't heard back from the LDS yet, maybe they are closed down. |

I stand corrected -- you'll be freezing your clit off... <dirty-old-man-grin> Reminds me of a rather cold day here in Houston a few years ago when I was wording for NASA via one of the aerospace contractors... One of the female engineers that was in my group came into my office one morning and there was a couple of us male engineers in there working on increasing our caffeine intake while talking about our project... She's shivering when she get in and comments, "it's cold enough to freeze my cajones off"... Well, me and one of the other engineers just kind of looked at each other, wondering who was going to be the first to say something... Finally, I couldn't hold it anymore and said, "Uhhh... Tracey, unless you've got a surprise for us, I don't think that would be physically possible for your anatomy"... It seems that her husband always said that and she just repeated it without knowing what "cajones" meant... Oh, we got a good laugh out of that one... Let's just say that we never really let her live that one down... Well, that one plus the time when she walked across 8 ft of freshly poured concrete sidewalk without realizing that she had sunk down to the top of her shoes with each step... What make that one funny was that she had to walk right by the guy with the trowel that was smoothing out the concrete at the time... > He is going through the Nuke program after he leaves the Recruit > Training Center in Great Lakes. I had wondered where they moved the nuke program after they shut down the Orlando facility... > He made it into the nuclear power program, so he had to sign up > for 6 years. Technically, he's signed up for 4 years after he accepts his E4/PO3 upon successful completion of his "A" school... Which one is he going with -- ET, EM, MM, or whatever rating they might have added these days? They have retired all the nuke cruisers, so his only choice will be aircraft carriers or subs... Having served aboard a carrier (CVN-68), I would suggest that he consider subs instead... The food is a lot better since the cooks are not cooking for 6000 guys all at once... > Smart kid, and mom gets to go diving in the Carolinas when > visiting ; ) I am trying to talk him into going to Hawaii, he is > also a diver, so that would be cool to get stationed somewhere that > I can visit and dive with him. Well, back when they had the nuke school down in Orlando, it was even better from a diving standpoint... These days, it's in Goose Creek, IIRC... > Cool photo, thanks. Somewhere in my stack of negatives, I have some rather interesting photos of various ice structures that were created when the waves from Lake Michigan splashed across shore objects... I suspect they were taken in December or January though... -- |
