| I have a Southern Illinois University student interning for me in West Central Florida who wants to get certified to dive. After doing some of our bathtub diving in Florida, he'll be going back north. However he is unfamilier with what type of diving is offered around Carbondale. We want to adjust some of his training to prepare him for what he'll be doing in a few months when he returns home. So what is the dive style up that way? River, quarries, lakes...?? wetsuit or drysuit? Any insights will be welcomed. TIA, Ron |

I did OW in Florida and moved home to Tennessee. Quarries are everywhere, Illinoisans are frequent to Gilboa in Ohio. http://www.divegilboa.com/ Myself, I dive lakes, rivers and quarries as well. It was quite a shock, though, water temps, -very generally- in the 50's & 60's, can be down to 40's. Very generally, 10 to 30 ft viz, with near zeeeero viz not being uncommon. 5 and 7 mill wetsuits and drysuits common. But that was 600 dives ago, and a better diver I am for it. I think the most important thing would be for your guy to find a good LDS, and experienced local divers to hang with. As far as varying his training? Make sure he knows how to -properly- , -repeatedly-, reconfigure weighting, get him some thick rubber and swap in a steel tank and let him work it. Getting used to a thick wetsuit isn't easy. Get a blackout mask, or get him very comfortable without a mask (I had the benefit of both). Get him in some close quarters at night, liken under the docks at Singer Island marina was helpful (and bug heavy, IMA). Once I got used to the temps, it was cake for me, and it would scare a lot of people where I'm willing to dive now. |

Lake Michigan may not be as warm as Florida, but we have the best wrecks you will find anywhere and thw visibility sis a whole lot better than the quarries the LDS's use for training dives.
