| Randy Cunningham got sentenced to 8.5 years for being a shitbag. Threw his life and honor away for a few dollars. As a boy and young man, he was one of my hero's. Let's hope this is the beginning of a trend where all people who violate the public trust get slammed to the deck, regardless of political party. |

They gave him time off his sentence because he was in the military, and his public service being an elected shit heels instead of a normal shit heels. Judges just don't seem to get the "violation of public trust" thing. |

They gave him time off his sentence because he was in the military, and his public service being an elected shit heels instead of a normal shit heels. Judges just don't seem to get the "violation of public trust" thing. Hard to say. From a practical perspective, there's not much difference between 100 months and 120 months. He's likely to live somewhere in the 85 month range, so either sentence means he's likely to die in prison, a broke and shattered man. The local military has been rutheless in their scathing condemnation of him. <http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/p...060304-9999-1n 4reax1.html> ³I think he betrayed us,² said Mike McNeil, 58, of San Diego, who retired in 1989 after 20 years as a Navy helicopter pilot. ³I think he should have hung.² Although others have had a somewhat different take: ________ <http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/p...-lz1c02duke.ht ml> Pastor Barry Minkow likes this teachable-moment idea so much that he suggests it come with a get-out-of-jail-free card. ³I wouldn't put him in prison at all,² says Minkow, who is senior pastor of Community Bible Church in San Diego. ³I'd put him on the speaking circuit.² Specifically, Minkow thinks Cunningham ought to meet face-to-face with every single member of Congress to share his wrongdoing and its consequences. Besides being an evangelical minister, Minkow is an ex-con. He went to prison in the 1980s for scamming investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars. Minkow found God in his cell and began studying for the ministry. In his spare time now, Minkow helps the FBI bust other scammers. His activities earned him a letter of commendation last year from the FBI, which cited his assistance on 13 cases. Last month, Minkow added another notch when a New Jersey confidence man was sentenced to prison. ³What Mr. Cunningham learned is what I learned: I wanted to do what was right, but I was prepared to do what was wrong,² says Minkow. ³I think that is a message that Mr. Cunningham could convey with so much credibility.² Minkow's motto: Failure doesn't have to be final. He wants to say the same to the failed former congressman. (if that name rings a bell, this may help jog your memory: <http://www.cfo.com/article.cfm/3516399/c_3516777?f=insidecfo> ) ___________ I also heard someone say on a local radio show that Cunningham should get three years: One in Abu Ghraib, one in Guantanamo, and one in a new "CIA run off-shore detention center" of his choice. The election for his replacement is April 11. The leading Democrat is OK, but not the brightest crayon in the box. There's a small pack of Republican contenders, all trying to portray themselves as squeaky clean and of high moral character. It's been a quiet campaign so far, but I expect things will heat up now that Cunningham is on the verge of becomming old news. Busby will get the most votes, but I doubt she will get the 50.1% needed for an outright win. That means there will be runoff election in November, and the current money is on Bilbray and Busby. Bilbray is kind of interesting, portraying himself as somewhat of a "moderate Republican surfer dude." Only in San Diego. Oh, and I get to vote in these elections. I live in Cunningham's congressional district |

I agree. But, thats what we get by letting the politicians divide us as a nation into two parties, at each others throats. We expect our politicians to be corrupt and make excuses for it directly on party lines. |
