| Here's some available money. From this mornings New York Times: The New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Flea Theater and the National Museum of the American Indian are among 63 arts and civic organizations that are to benefit from more than $27 million in grants being announced today by state and city officials. The federal grants, ranging from $20,000 to $2 million, will be funneled through the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation with the goal of reviving cultural activity downtown. The biggest chunk goes to the New Museum, which is building a new $60 million home on the Bowery. Lee |

| Another way that people can help is to go to a local concert of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, partly because last year, Prudential Insurance via NJPAC made a private donation of $300,000 to save the tour. Here's their homepage. The concert schedule's buried down a few levels & on a Flash page...no direct URL available. http://www.thenojo.com/front.html Here's what they currently have listed: March 31, 2006 San Francisco, CA San Francisco Palace April 1, 2006 Bellingham, WA Mount Baker Theater April 2, 2006 Seattle, WA Benaroya Hall April 3, 2006 Victoria, BC Univ Centre Auditorium April 4, 2006 Vancouver, BC The Centre April 7, 2006 La Jolla, CA Spreckels Theater April 8, 2006 NOJO Scottsdale, AZ Scottsdale Center April 11, 2006 Tucson, AZ Centennial Hall -hh |

It's so nice knowing that our kids are educated well enough and our veterans are provided for enough that we can now start using public [cough] money on far more important tasks like these. |

I have to wonder if part of it was that they hadn't been taught how to take *our* test like the rest of our kids were. The teachers these days are required to "teach to the test." If they'd just teach the material the kids would learn it and do fine. |

If they'd just > teach the material the kids would learn it and do fine. I was on a DoD contract over in New Orleans back before Katrina... There seems to be a mentality among many students in the New Orleans school district that not only do they not want to learn, but they don't want anyone else to learn... Blaming it on trauma is just a cop-out... There are good schools in the New Orleans *area*, but they tend to be in the suburbs, especially on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain (e.g. St. Tammany Parish School District)... |
