Questions for South Florida inhabitants

Because of events completely unrelated to scuba, I *may* *possibly* be able to make a trip to
your general region in September (specifically, September 19-23). This is not a scuba trip,
although I could probably be enticed into participating in a day of diving somewhere along the way.
Here's the deal. Texas A&M's football team will be making the journey to play Miami in the
Orange Bowl on the 20th (it's a Thursday). I *may* be able to work it out such that I get to go to
the game. If I do, I'll probably be flying in on Wednesday and flying back out on Sunday.

Questions:
I'd like a hotel close to the beach and reasonably close to the Orange Bowl. I'm thinking that
Miami Beach may be a good location (specifically, the San Juan Hotel or the President Hotel). Am I
right, or is there somewhere else you would recommend?
Any caveats regarding that particular time of year (i.e. buy trip insurance cuz it's hurricane
season)?
Any advice about attending a game in the Orange Bowl (i.e. wear kevlar)?
Anything else you can think of that I've overlooked (i.e. everything)?

There will be no hurricanes threatening SoFla the latter part of September.

That is also when the water is warmest, ideal diving time. Yer a fool if
ya don't take advantage.

Miami Beach is nice that time of year. Hot as hell. That's off season,
but they may be jacking the rates a bit for the ball game(?). Any hotel
will do as long as it has A/C and is within walking distance of Lincoln Rd.

Make yer transportation arrangements to the stadium early and confirm
them. I think you might find mini-buses running from the Beach, cabs are
unreliable and very expensive.

If it works out the way I'm thinking it might, I figure that Wednesday will mostly be a travel day.
Thursday morning could be open for some diving, but I figure that I should be at the stadium no
later than 6:15 for the 7:00 kickoff. Friday could include some diving, but if I'm with the people
I hope to be with I figure that it'll be one day or the other, not both. One of the friends I'd be
taking is certified. That makes three of us (including me and Janeen). The rest of the group won't
be (2 to 4 more people).

I'd love to spend some time underwater, but I don't know how easy that will be to work out within
the group.

It'd be even better if I could arrange for the entire week instead of just a few days, but I don't
my wife would be able to get away for that long.

Naw, dive with Chris would have been last year.

This year, we should be leery of diving with any rec scubans named
Chantal, Dean, Erin, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid or Jerry.

Depends upon how you booked the room... We had previously booked a
hotel via hotels.com and upon arrival there, was not satisfied that
the the room was really of the level that they claimed it to be...
Quite frankly, we did not consider it acceptable... Yeah, the lobby
and such looked great, but the actual rooms just weren't quite up to
the level that they claimed... If I had cancelled via hotels.com a
couple of days before arriving, I would have *only* had a $25
cancellation fee... Of course, this is something that would not have
occurred if I had booked directly via the actual hotel... As it was, I
would have been charged a one night room rate for a cancellation
fee... Their policy was also that even if I decided to put up with the
hotel for one night and checkout early (before the total number of
days that I had already paid for was up), I would not get a refund...
All in all, not exactly a policy that I liked... After asking to speak
to the agent's manager, I got them to waive the cancellation fee, but
they said that this was a one time only sort of thing... I'm not
saying that I wouldn't reserve a room via them again, but I'm more
likely not to use them except when reserving a room at the very last
possible minute (i.e. when I'm sitting in my car outside the actual
hotel)... Unfortunately, I've found that quite often going to the
actual hotel will not give you as good of a rate as going to one of
the online reservation services... In such situations, I pull out my
laptop, find an open WiFi connection and make the reservation with
hotels.com / expedia.com / whatever... As a side note, I've discovered
that in certain situations, the online services do not have the best
rate for a room... For Grace's current project over in Irvine, the
deal that has been negotiated by Toshiba for their corporate rate
beats what the online services quote... Unfortunately, this is not
always true in that I've seen cases where the corporate rate was
higher than the online rate...
