Default Lake Champlain wreck sites ?

Can anyone offer any advice (wreck locations, charters, website) for
Lake Champlain. Was thinking about a trip next summer.

I await your collective wisdom.

Dave

Cold water. Very cold water. This lake freezes over every winter and
just about thaws out by diving season only to freeze up again a few
months later. You can find some nice pickup trucks under it that tried
to go ice fishing just a little to late in the season...

There used to be a very good dive shop right down by the water in
Burlington.

Sounds a lot like local diving to me, here in northeastern Ontario. Dive
season starts in late May for those with drysuits and continues to end of
October. For the warm water wimps, July to mid September. Warm water is
anything over 70 degrees.

HEY !!!! there are a whole 3 days of summer between thaw and freeze
:^)

water highs (5 ft from the surface) are perhaps 74F .. even in the
height of summer you can easily find 50F at 60 FFW. Wetsuit is fine
don't let it scare ya ... keeps ya from falling asleep.

dive shop by the Burlington waterfront http://waterfrontdiving.com
Waterfront Diving Center ... sort of took over the hole Northern
Divers left when it closed (80's ? ).

to the OP

The best reason for diving Lake Champlain (besides getting wet) is the
history ... a good sample is in the Underwater Preserve
www.charts-usa.com has NOS chart snips of all but the Waterwitch,
whose location is near the Stone Boat - Diamond Island.

My favorites are the OJ Walker and the Phoenix (which looks like a
huge canoe thanks to being burned to the waterline) . The Witch is
supposed to be a great wreck, I haven't been to it yet. The Butler is
a good entry level dive.

I personally would ignore the Coal barge, the wreck is mostly a debris
field.

Most diving is by boat / charter. Decent shore diving is limited ...
especially off downtown Burlington during the summer when the ferry is
running in Burlington. When they shut it down, the bottom in
Burlington Harbor will often offer up clay pipes , bottles and at
least over the years a handgun and a Doberman (sleeping with the
fishies).

Which side of the lake and nearest city do you expect be ?

What are your interests and depth preferences ?

the http://www.lcmm.org/ link is a good one ... they built a sailing
copy of the Philadelphia (1776 gunboat) and are involved with building
a sailing canal schooner on the Burlington waterfront which should hit
the water July 3 2004.

If you can be a bit specific in where and what you're looking for,
I'll see if I can help

If I need more than a 3mm shorty, it's too cold for me. :o)
These days I can be at 25 meters at 29 degrees Celsius in a matter of
hours
