Default Question about underwater disposable cameras

Hi, I've seen those disposible cameras everywhere, and on the back it says they go to a depth of 5 meters, has anyone tried to take them down to about normal diving depth, say about 20 meters or so, it could be that the 5 meters they say is just guaranteed it would work, but it could still possibly work at a greater depth, if they still work than I could take some down with me and make a couple of pictures, I don't need great quality photo's or something like that, just some photo's to have some memories later on, but I wanna know if they would implode at that depth or not.

The 20-ft models are truly useful down to 20 feet. Past that, the mechanism
that you turn to advance the film stops turning. There is an 85-foot version
made by Snap Sights that works well down around 90 feet.

Also worth noting is the fact that, if you're gentle, you can change the
film an re-use many of the "one use" cameras.

It's a hit or miss deal, some will work deeper than advertised, while
others may not leak, but the controls become sticky with the added pressure.

Let me put my disclaimer on this message first.... I DO NOT RECOMMEND doing
the following:

I know a person that has used this throw away type cameras at great depths.
As you descend the film winder gets bound up and won't turn. This person
would take a photo in the 60 range, then swim up to about 15 ft to wind the
camera to the next frame, return to 60 ft to take a photo and then repeat
over and over.

I can't imagine that sawtooth dive profile can be healthful, but I'm not a
doctor so I won't say.

Anyway, the answer to your question, will they work? Yes, they will. Is it
logical? No, it is not.

Wade

In addition to the other pplicable comments, the shutter button on some cameras
will automatically depress at depth because of the pressure on the button. The
film will not advance because the shutter button is stuck depressed. Ascending
and rewinding, then descending will work as someone stated. I had a little
luck with such a situation long ago by gluing a hard-to-depress disk over the
shutter button to increase its resistance pressure at depth. This worked some
of the time, but not always.

The other solution is to put the camera on a length of string and float it high
enough that the shutter release will reset. That's worked on occasion.
I wouldn't try taking them much further than 60' or so, but I never hit their
limit.

In addition to what everyone else said about the winder and
the shutter button being depressed, your pictures will
come out "all blue" at that depth due to the fact the light
is less, etc. and most of those disposables don't have
a flash on them, and if they do, they are very limited.

Take a big torch and waterproof duct tape and a piece of stick, tape the
stick to the cam, and tape the torch at the far end of the stick, aimed at
the point the cam focuses at... hey presto, a permantly on strobe, with
enough separation to solve backscatter problems.

Wade,
I used a disposible camera by putting it on a string. After a photo I
would release it and it would float up until the shutter would release, then
pull it down to me and I would advance the film. Not great but it worked.
My grandson reloaded film in the camera 7-8 times before the plastic broke.
