| I'm just back from a wonderful diving trip to the British Virgin Islands. I dived with Bluewater Divers and found them to be excellent. No struggling around moving decks with the tank on - just sit on the back and they put on your bcd add some air and you roll into the aqua-blue water. I dived Thumb Rock, Coral Gardens and best of all the wreck of the RMS Rhone. The divemaster was great at pointing out the galley, condensors, mast and birds nest etc. As the wreck is quite open, its fairly bright inside but on the first deeper dive I was still pleased to have my torch to look into the darker openings.( thankfully no skeletons after so many had perished on board). The wreck is teaming with fish life and we also got close with a big turtle and octopus. Afterwards a TV crew turned up to film interviews with me and our divemaster about the wreck for NBC Today prog (Feb. 13th). The highlight for me was however, on a snorkeling trip! Off Guana island we snorkelled into a steep rocky bay into shoals of silver fish which were so dense that they turned the sea dark and reduced vis to near zero. 4/5 feet below the surface it was clear again and we saw bigger parrotfish, yellow-tailed snapper, palometas etc. Nurse shark on the bottom....followed by the biggest adrenalin rush I've ever had in the sea! We dived below the dark cloud of small fish and nearly bumped into a huge 6+ft tarpon with 2 remoras..followed by a whole school of 60/70 tarpon fron 4ft to 7ft long charging past us like a silver torrent. It was breathtaking! It was like standing on a racetrack with cars speeding either side of you and just missing by centimeters! Over the next 10 minutes it happened another twice as they schooled back around the bay. Anyone else had this experience? I certainly recommend BVI diving with a bit of snorkelling thrown in! Mike. |
