| Hi, all. It's been a few years since I've visited this newsgroup. Two of us are planning a trip to Loreto or La Paz in June. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for dive operators and/or places to stay? We don't like roughing it too much in the hotel department, so we're not really looking for the cheapest. We like to be "in town" or near it, whatever that means. ...haven't been there before, so we don't know the lay of the land. Thanks, Ginny |

Might be some better places now--been a long while since I was there. |

I see a reply posted here to you from Irby and I agree. I've been diving there twice but both times I was on Baja Expeditions' liveaboard, The Don Jose. We stayed at the Los Arcos hotel in La Paz for the day/night before we flew home. It's a very nice hotel...has a gift shop, restaurant, cocktail lounge, pool... very nice. And it's in a great location in town so that you can walk to see most of the shops and to get to other restaurants. Baja Expeditions has day boats and so you can dive with them that way too. Their website is at : http://www.bajaex.com/ Have a good trip !! |

Have dived in La Paz a number of times -- the last few on a liveaboard (Don Jose) but also land based. Baja Expeditions offers a land based package with Los Arcos, right on the waterfront in town, as mentioned. Their day trips are normally two 8o cf Al tank dives and a 63 cf dive-- the boat they use for day trips is relatively slow, so it makes a long day, though they serve you breakfast, lunch and a PM snack on board. The other operation in La Paz used to be called Baja Diving Services or the Arcaleo Brothers , don't know what name they are using now. They operate out of a base about ten miles out of town and use a whole flotilla of different types of boats, mostly "six packs" but also larger. They will pick you up at your in town hotel in the AM and deliver in the PM. Their location makes it about one hour less to the main dive sites. They normally only serve a (cold) lunch and do two dives. The dive sites are rather few in number and everyone dives the same half dozen or so sites. A typical day with Baja Expeditions day trip will be two dives at Los Isolotes and one short one on the way back at the Silvatera Ferry (wreck) or two at El Bajo and the Silvatera, etc. Bill |
