I went Sipadan-Mabul Water Village in Oct 2003. Had a memorable time.
It is on Mabul and not Sipadan. If you stay at Mabul, you'll dive all 3
islands, Kapalai,Mabul and Sipadan. If you stay at Sipadan, mostly Sipadan.
If you wanna do night dives, you'd better stay at Mabul. The house-reef
is.....incredible day and night!!! Sipadan you'll see the "package", big
turtles, lots of jacks, sharks and barracudas. I missed the vortex of
barracudas. Not my lucky trip but made up by the frog fishes, flamboyant
cuttlefish, mandarin fish, ghost pipe fish. Couldn't find any pygmy
seahorses tho'. The DMs were so under pressured hahahahah There is anotehr
good resort called SMART and another water village at Kapalai (more
run-down) SWV is really great in terms of food, DMs, service, rooms and it
is facing the oil rig-Seaventures. It also has a helipad and tight security.
Jointly owned by a Jap and local, hence security real tight. If you want, I
can send you pictures that I have taken there. Cheers.

Well do. It's a shame that you couldn't have hooked up with them
during your last trip to Singapore. I know that they wanted to meet
you... after all the good things that I said about you. :)

Thank you for your kind replay and your information.
I hope to see all the "big animals" during my stay in Sipadan - most of all
the hammerheads, even if I think to dive sometimes in Kapalai (same diving
center and resort of Sipadan) looking for critters - I love mandarin fish
and pygmy seahorse since I saw them in Manado.
I will be glad to see your photo (Underwater? What kind of camera have you
used?).
I'm very interested in everything regarding Sipadan.
The e-mail address is : pavikend@pavikend.191.it

I'm also looking for some book about Sipadan, but I've only found some book
concerning Borneo generally.

Thank you and bye bye

Take Sipadan Dive Center, or Borneo Divers - both on the drop-off - both
look the best.
To get to Mabul or Kapalai yo need about 30-40 minutes by boat (depending on
weather).
You can make both islands(reefs) one day - one dive each.
Worth to go.

best,
F.

I just got back from Sipadan and Kapalai
we spent 7 nights on sipadan and three nights on Kapalai

Diving Sipadan was fantastic I would go again tomorrow.
from Kapalai we dived the oil rig Mabul and just out Kapalali

the most amazing things pigmey sea horses about 8mm tall
so many frog fish some small some big. a moray under the oil rig (elvis)
must be ten foot
long the biggest I have ever seen. The giant shaol of jack off sipadan one
million plus fish ???

some one in this thread said Kapalai was run down !!!! the room we had was
too good to be true but the room on sipadan was a bit tired.

David

What resort did you stay in on Sipadan? Did you get over to Mabul and did
you see any Mandarin fish? TIA

Responses to several postings in this thread:

Sipadan Water Village on Mabul didn't charge extra to go to Sipadan or
Kapalai. It's part of the normal diving routine. We were there 3 weeks ago
and went to the other islands every day. We even did sone 2-tankers at
Sipadan, offgassing for an hour between dives at the Drop Off Cafe on
Sipadan.

The boat rides from Mabul to Sipadan were more like 15-20 minutes than
30-40. Perhaps SWV has faster boats than the operations on Sipadan?
Kapalai was a little closer, and an even shorter ride. But nothing can beat
the 45-second boat trip to Paradise 3 from SWV. It's just a little too far
for most people to snorkel out, although you often dive your way back to the
resort.

There was an enormous pink frogish at 2nd Bouy at Kapalai three weeks ago.
Maybe he went for a walkabout.
