Default Loreta or other Baja Califorornia locations

Has anyone been to Loreta or any other place in Baja California? Is
this time of year a good time to go? Is the water so cold that it's
unbearable, or is it not so bad? Do you recomend liveaboard or
land-based? Is it comparable to like the Galapagos? Do you see big
balls of schools of fish?

Any info would be much appreciated!!!!!

Happy diving!

I've been diving at Cabo San Lucas (tip of Baja). The water temp was in the
90's when I was there in late summer! But the temperature isn't consistant
enough to support much in the way of coral reef. However, there's an
abundance of tropical fish. Highlights included dives around the rock
pinnacles at Land's End and an encounter with a huge manta ray.

There's great fishing in that area too (tuna, swordfish).

I was there a few years ago during April. The weather was hot and pleasant,
the sunsets spectacular, but water temp was in the mid-70s. I got chilled
with a 5-mil suit after about 45 minutes. A dry suit this time of year
wouldn't be out of place, or at least a 7-mil wet suit. But the drift
diving around Isla Coronado was excellent--saw torpedoes, which I'd never
seen before, and saw my first school of juvenile barracudas.

Loreto is a lovely town with very friendly people--very easy to make friends
there. You'll love it, but the one daily flight in and out of town from LAX
fills up fast, so book as far in advance as you can. Have fun!

You might want to read the trip reports from ReefSeekers...

http://www.reefseekers.com/Baja_2002.html
http://www.reefseekers.com/Baja_2003.html

I was on both of these trips and with any luck, I'll be back again
with them this October.
