| It turns out that DAN doesn't cover you if you are diving in an area that has been given a travel alert. And you can't get any other kind of health coverage either. Ergo, for my trip to Sipadan, I will not be covered either by DAN or anything else. It matters not that if I have an accident, it has only to do with diving, or a car accident. The fact that there was a singular incident in Sipadan over two years ago, results in a travel alert recommendation not to travel to Sabah. Therefore, no coverage. Period. Not just no coverage if I'm shot, not just no coverage if I'm kidnapped. No coverage regardless of the cause for need. *&^#%$**^#%#$!! |

For what it's worth, when we travel in these sorts of 'problem areas' (and we do often despite the travel alerts,) we each carry our own 'hostage kits.' Using black waterproof plastic cigarette box sized containers, (marked up to look old and unimportant,) we each carry a course of co-tri-moxizole for dysentery, a course of amoxicillin, some antihistamine tablets, a dozen Tramadol HCL, and paracetamol. We also include $200 in US ten dollar bills, a pencil stub, and a small BIC lighter. We have these in our pocket and with us at ALL times except when we are underwater. Obviously this won't help you if you are shot. But neither will DAN. Don't let lack of security spoil your vacation. Security doesn't really exist anyway. " Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of man as a whole ever experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." Helen Keller - 1957 Enjoy Sipadan and dive safely. Steve Kramer Chiang Mai, Thailand Five years, six months, three weeks, 10 hours, 21 minutes and 36 seconds. 60942 cigarettes not smoked, saving $15,235.73. Time used for a better purpose: 30 weeks, 1 day, 14 hours, 30 minutes. -- "The real voyage of discovery is not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes!" Marcel Proust |

Further, I'm Canadian and further yet, that notice was to have expired in November 2003. > Terrorists win when they stop people from their routines, which I refuse to > do. I am also going to Jakarta to see family. I'm not covered there either. > |

It isn't actually DAN that won't cover me while I am in a travel alert area. It is their underwriter. Their underwriter has the same position as does the other two types of health travel insurance I have tried to purchase. Well, heck I can purchase anything I want, they just won't cover me if I get hurt in Sabah. Apparently, because I shouldn't have been there in the first place. |

| I must have missed something about this since the only discussion of medical evacuation, etc. says: When you have been stabilized to the satisfaction of the Assist America doctor and the attending physician, Assist America will arrange transport back to the United States under medical supervision if it is necessary. I see no mention about limitations due to State Department advisories. Dr. Yak |
