First edition 1938. Dodd, Mead and Company. Hardcover, 182 pages, Mono prints. The 1938 cover text is: The new sport, which combines fishing, hunting and submarine sightseeing. The Complete Goggler Being the first and only exhaustive treatise on the art of Goggle Fishing That most Noble and excellent sport perfected and popularized by GUY GILPATRIC in the Mediterranean sea .Though long practised elsewhere by other benighted savages setting forth the proper manner and making the goggles, spears and other needful gadgets together with descriptions of many marvels witnessed upon the bottom of the sea and fully exposing the authors cunning methods of swimming diving and spear fishing fish and octopi Description: First Edition. With "1938 by Guy Gilpatric" on the copyright page. With 33 splendid photographs of speared fish, octopi, and the Goggler himself adorned in all his glory. The first book on goggle fishing which includes many photos and a folding plate of "The Dive" which was once stuck and carelessly separated, resulting in some tears to the page facing 113. G+ in woven green cloth stamped in gold on the front boards and spine. The cloth and gold are rubbed and soiled. Internally very clean and tight with some foxing to the verso of the frontispiece. Gilpatric was an American ex-aviator living in southern France, pioneers use of rubber goggles with glass lenses for skin diving. By the mid-1930s, face masks, fins, and snorkels are in common use. In 1934 Gilpatric writes of his Mediterranean exploits for The Saturday Evening Post, and in 1938 publishes The Complete Goggler, the first book on amateur diving and hunting.
