COMMENTATORS are wondering whether the latest sexual pastime to hit
the headlines in the UK, "dogging", has reached Sri Lanka after the
country`s chief justice was implicated in a car sex scandal.

"Dogging" came to the public`s attention when former international
footballer Stan Collymore was arrested for the practice, in which
couples get a thrill from having sex in public places, often car parks
or inside cars.

"Dogging" refers to the idea that practioners often cover their tracks
by saying they are taking their (imaginary) dog out for a walk.

Chief Justice Sarath N de Silva vehemently denies being involved in
any sex scandal and says the accusations are politically motivated.

He said he received telephone calls claiming he was detected in a
"compromising position with a lady" on Tuesday night at a secluded
road near the parliament complex in Colombo.

Police are currently investigating the complaint. "The story is
completely baseless and I strongly deny it," de Silva said in a
statement.

"I am compelled to state that this may be a part of a scheme to
discredit me in view of the series of cases pending before the Supreme
Court."

Police confirmed that they received a complaint from the chief justice
and it related to an incident of an "elderly-looking man in the
company of a young woman".

Police said they tried to question the couple on suspicion of indecent
behaviour on a public road when the man claimed he was the chief
justice, prompting the constables to let them go.

The main opposition United National Party, which had previously
attempted to impeach de Silva over a separate controversy, has
demanded a thorough investigation.
