Just looked at the projected path. Good luck to them all.
One of the locals once told me they get a bad one every hundred years or
so, so much for avoiding hurricane alley...and then it looks like it's
headed right up the gulf to the panhandle.

Hurricane Lenny hit Curacao in 1999 causing considerable damage to
shallow parts of the reefs. When we were there in 2003, there was
already some small signs of coral growth.

Lenny, a Cat. 3, was located considerably further away than Ivan a Cat 4
that went to a 5 as it went west. The ABC islands weren't actually hit
as Lenny passed far to the north, but they did experience the surge. I
suspect the amount of damage experienced had something to do with the
rare direction that Lenny took, starting around Jamaica and tracking in
the opposite direction (west to east) that most caribbean hurricanes take.

I was in Bonaire in 1999 and last in 2002. Corals that were more than a
couple of meters high were wiped out, as most everything at less than 30
feet. At a growth rate of approx. 1 cm per year, I think I won't live
to see it as it was in the days before Lenny passed by. I do plan to
keep checking on it every other year or so, though :)

Excellent clarification..Lenny never hit the ABC's as a
hurricane..storm surge for sure. In fact those with Hurricane
Insurance were NOT covered.. those with flood insurance were. This was
told to me first hand by my friend who owns a dive shop.

Go to www.bonairetalk.com for good info on what happened during Ivan
in Bonaire. You could have watched the wrath of Ivan on
www.bonairewebcams.com until dark. Very interesting.

Ouch! Watching seaside restaurants topple under the weight of the surge
and piers get taken out to sea must have hurt all the more for them.
Made for a bit of rough entries and exits afterwards as well :)

As a matter of fact, I did. As slow as those pages loaded, I wasn't the
only one watching, either! I think I'm due for some Bonaire bottom
time. Glad the physical damage was minimal and everyone was safe from
harm. Let's hope the same for the Caymans and Florida.

Things in the Caymans are indeed very grim. Go to www.stormcarib.com
and read pleas of help to see what is happening and how you can help.
