| The Pacific Princess has left Manta, Ecuador 2 hours ago, crusing toward the Panama Canal. The Captain announced over dinner tonight that because of the devastation in Grand Cayman by Hurricane Ivan, the ship will change course and itinerary and stop at Ocho Rio instead of Grand Cayman. -- Bob. |

If those cruise ships are so big and powerful, why don't they just move the hurricane? |

It is passing through the last LOCK now, with a clearance of about 1 foot on both sides of the ship. (The width of the Panama Canal locks has become the de facto max spec of the WIDTH of any ship that expects to go through the canal between the Pacific and the Atlantic. > > > > The Captain announced over dinner tonight that because of the > > devastation in Grand Cayman by Hurricane Ivan, the ship will change > > course and itinerary and stop at Ocho Rio instead of Grand Cayman. > > If those cruise ships are so big and powerful, why don't they just move the > hurricane? As big and powerful the biggest and most powerful cruiseship is, a hurricane such as Ivan is probably 100,000 more powerful, depending on how you measure "powerful". But the cruiseship can certainly RUN AWAY from a hurricane faster than any liveaboard boat, and I've not heard of any hurricane turning a moored cruiship upside down in one gust of wind as the hurricane did to the Wave Dancer in Belize. -- Bob. |

Don't forget the Poseidon Adventure. I hope you can hold your breath as long as Shelly Winters. |

If ignorance is bliss, this guy is one of the most blissful in the group. I don't know what liveaboards he's talking about, but my experience clearly differs from his. Cruise ships are not all that fast. While they may be able to outrun a slow storm, they're not likely to beat out one of the faster ones . . . and the Wave Dancer was exposed to a bit more than one gust of wind. Never mind. Bob's not one to let the facts get in his way. Lee |

Well, well, looky who's here: DING-DONG Lee Bell -- that's the name bestowed Lee, by the most respected member of the listserv LIST, who NEVER had any flamewar with anyone except the ones provoked by Lee Bell. Now, Lee is known by EVERYONE on that list as Mr. DING DONG. When I saw the subject "ding, dong, the dickheads gone" in rec.scuba, I thought they were referring to Lee. But it was someone else. > > I don't know what liveaboards he's talking about, but my experience clearly > differs from his. Cruise ships are not all that fast. Lee's experience on liveaboards and cruiseships? Virtually NONE. But you don't have to be ON any of them to ascertain FACTS about them. Lee is well-known for his antics of having one foot in mouth, while shooring his other foot. DING DONG's fast draw: > Never mind. Bob's not one to let the facts get in his way. > > Lee Lee never bothers to LOOK for any facts. These are just EXAMPLES readily found on webpages: Cayman Aggressor: crusing speed 12 knots Okeanos Aggressor (to Cocos Island): cruising speed 10 knots Pacific Princess (the smallest/slowest) cruising speed 20 knots Sapphire Princess: cruising speed 23 knots Lee forgot to brag this time that I am on his "blocked list" -- that he doesn't read my posts, only those snippets cited by others. Lee> If ignorance is bliss, this guy is one of the most blissful Lee> in the group. Lee, you couldn't have found a better example in your present post for the above characterization of YOURSELF! Congratulations. -- Bob. |

You've been hanging around rec.scuba.* too much to have undoubtedly caught the ADS from the folks like DING-DONG Bell. -- Bob. |
