While on a Red Sea trip a few years back a fellow passenger took a hit from a lionfish at Tobia. DAN was called and they arranged for evacuation from the boat. We met the helicopter at Safaga and he was evac'd to a hospital in Hurghada where he spent 2 days. Apparently his hand went bad and he was further evac'd to a hospital in Paris, where he spent a week or so before being released to the US..I know that everything from the boat to the hospital in Paris was covered by DAN, meaning travel and medical, though I am not 100% clear if DAN also paid to repatriate him to the US. My policy says it will pay to return the injured diver to the US, I just can't confirm that this happened in his case. I carry it, never have used it, but like the care he received after his injury. I also like the work DAN does on behalf of all divers. |

Every divemaster I know has DAN insurance. Even if you are a once a year diver, it may be worth the benefits in an emergency, such as evac to a decompression chamber and equipment replacement/recovery. Go to the DAN website and read up on it. http://www.diversalertnetwork.com ~Rayne |

They emailed me on my birthday to say 'happy birthday' - which is more than my mates did. I was quite chuffed for 5 secs, until I thought 'computer generated' - but its quite a nice touch. |

They say all medical expenses were supposed to be around $200K. DAN Master insurance, that covers such expenses, costs about $65/year. |

I suggest that you ask the same question on uk.rec.scuba You will find that there is a very different opinion than is beeing expressed here. The feeling on uk.rec.scuba is based on an incident and DAN's replys to it. -- >replace spamblock with my family name to e-mail me |

Everyone seems to be talking about Diving Accident insurance. http://www.diversalertnetwork.com/insurance/compare.asp I thought the question was about Trip Cancellation and Interuption insurance. http://www.diversalertnetwork.com/trip/index.asp My general impression is that anything that is likey to ruin your trip is not covered by trip cancellation insurance. I have not read the specifics of DAN's plan. Dan Bracuk Is it my imagination, or do Buffalo Wings taste like chicken? I thought the OP was talking about DAN's Preferred Plan "trip insurance" benefits, which covers non-diving medical, plus has trip cancellation/interruption benefits (excluding airfare and only applies to cancellation for medical reasons). The Preferred Plan (which also has a higher dive accident benefit) is only $70 a year on top of the membership fee. For four dive trips a year, that works out to $17.50 per trip for insurance. Not too bad. > My general impression is that anything that is likey to ruin your trip > is not covered by trip cancellation insurance. I have not read the > specifics of DAN's plan. DAN's trip insurance looks to be the same as any other trip insurance, i.e. a lousy deal. I priced a policy covering my upcoming trip to Thailand: $834. Personally I'd rather apply the money toward a future trip and take my chances. The only completely non-refundable portion of my trip is the liveaboard and if there's any reason serious enough to invoke the trip insurance, getting my money back for the dive trip is the least of my worries. If it is a medical reason for canceling, my $70 Preferred plan will reimburse me. |
