If you are that poor, you can always use dive tables. If you want to buy new, but inexpensive, shop around. Compare prices at your local dive shop with on-line merchants. If it's an on-line merchant, make sure they ship to where you live. Stick to a Suunto Octopus instead of a Vyper, for example. Also, have a look at the Sensus Pro dive recorder as reviewed in Diver this month. I have no connection to the mag or the company I assure you. It appears to be a half-way house. You dive on tables, but you get a computer-style profile record of your dive. Ken |

If you really want used you can check ebay, and ask at any local dive clubs. You can probably find a decent deal from somebody who thought they were only going to dive air and just bought a nitrox computer. -- Steve The above can be construed as personal opinion in the absence of a reasonable belief that it was intended as a statement of fact. I've just bought a new Apex Quantum for £169, which I thought was a very good price. Don't know if it is within your budget. It came from Go-Dive in Derby ( http://www.godive.net/gdspec.htm ) with whom I have no connection other than being a happy customer; the price included recorded delivery. Previously I had found the same computer being sold on the web through E-bay. The rrp for the Quantum is (afaik) about £250, so initially I was only phoning Go-dive to confirm that I would be getting a bargain by buying off E-Bay... However, when they told me their price it was an easy decision to buy from a 'real' retailer over the phone rather than mess around with auctions, paypal and a 'virtual' retailer over the net. The auctions all seemed to be ending about £169 anyway, with postage on top. I got it wet yesterday for the first time and it seems to do the business. Like you I have no current intention to use Nitrox so for me getting a computer that would deal with air and nitrox or two nitrox mixes was just a bonus. The description of the computer on the Go-Dive site is linked to a review article which I found elsewhere and thought was quite useful. Hope this helps. Cheers, M |

If he wants sensible dive times without doing loads of deco he will end up doing Nitrox. That's why the Vyper is such good bit of kit for the price, especially if he also wants to do table diving as it also offers Gauge mode. Tony. |
