Default Bornéo / Malarria

Hello!

I intend to spend 3 weeks in Bornéo in Augsut : Diving (of course), but
getting around in Sabbah as well.

I am not fond of Malarria prevention medics : who s got any clue on the
imperious necessity to swallow pills at that time of the yeay over there?

Thanks for your help
Julien

I have traveled most of south east asia with out taking any medivation
for malaria. I am not enamoured by the side effects, however the chances
of getting malaria in Borneo ar considerably higher and I would
deffinatly take the drugs if go in there. I have travelled through the
middle of Sumatra which is not quite as bad without taking anything, but
then I was only in the area 24 hrs.

Best protection - don't get bit!! funny but true, spray your room and
inside your net before going out to dinner and wear long sleeves and
trousers at dusk and dawn.

Good luck

Sabbah is a dangerous area. It's up to you: you may just protect yourself
with repellents and accept the risk or you decide to do something serious.
Last year I've been in Papua New Guinea and all the divers there were using
malarone.

www.malarone.com

Easy to use, no side effects, it's a daily pill and you can start 24 hours
before entering the area.

And you only have to take it a week after leaving (rather than a month with
the others), so its great for short trips. It is expensive, about £1/pill
so also not something you'd want to use on a very long trip.

You're not allowed to use it on a long trip. I think the maximum dose that
they'll give you is a month's worth. I used it in Vanuatu with no side
effects. I also used a lot of repellant, had one of those plugin machines
in my room and only got bitten once.
